Much of my work is based on natural settings I have explored, primarily in the Pacific Northwest, California, the Southwest and Latin America. Consistent with the painter Lucian Freud's idea that "the picture in order to move us must never merely remind us of life, but must aquire a life of its own" -- I seek in my landscapes to impart the energy, emotion, and drama of each setting that I paint. It is less a literal translation of a scene than an interpretation of the impact of the landscape.
I find inspiration in the works of many other artists who have focused on interpretations of the natural world, including: Emily Carr, Jane Freilicher, Claude Lorraine, Emil Nolde, Georgia O'Keefe, Tom Thompson and The Group of Seven.
